BEFORE--check out the IHS, clearly visible above the university's logo
AFTER--now it's gone JESUIT GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY VEILS REFERENCE TO JESUS TO MAKE PRESIDENT HAPPY
Honest to God--wouldn't you think the higherups in Catholic education would have learned their lesson from Notre Shame? You can read the whole story here and here , but suffice it to say that Jesuit Georgetown University was told by the White House that it must veil all university insignia. The name of Jesus (for that is what IHS stands for) was hidden. So ashamed were University officials that the monogram for Christ, and a specifically Jesuit one at that, could not be seen for fear of offended the President whose views on morality are inimical to Catholic belief. When did they take out the spines of modern Jesuits? Wait--what's that sound? Oh yeah, just the bones of St. Ignatius Loyola rolling over in his grave at what his soldiers of Christ for the 21st century are doing. How pathetic. In all seriousness, the liberal or progressive wing of Catholicism needs to look at how much they are willing to jetison, how far they are willing to bend, how complicit with the modern world they wish to be before the label Catholic will no longer stick.
*****UPDATE: GEORGETOWN DID NOT COVER UP THE NAME OF JESUS WHEN LAURA BUSH SPOKE THERE IN 2006. READ MORE ABOUT IT HERE .
Sorry, but I can't see a thing other than sunlight coming through 3 stained glass windows in that top photo...
****Perhaps the resolution is bad. It's clear in my photo. Maybe you are looking at the wrong place. IHS is clearly seen below the inverted V on the wooden backdrop. But in all honesty--if you can't see it, trust those who have or have not--the name of Christ was blotted out by the University so as not to offend the President.
