A FOND FAREWELL TO THE CELTIC AUTHOR OF THE CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN--ONE OF THE BEST FANTASY SERIES IN ENGLISH
On May 17, Lloyd Alexander, prolific writer, best remembered for his Chronicles of Prydain fantasy series, passed away. For a spectacular obit and memoir see the American Spectator's article Somewhere Gurgi Grieves.
When I was younger, I loved these books. As the oldest of six in a family without a father, I was always on the lookout for good reading for my brothers and sisters. I, as well as my family, fell in love with the Welsh myths and legends surrounding the Prydain tales and the great lessons told by Alexander as Taran, the Assistant Pig Keeper, grows up to be a hero. Worthy to stand in the shadows of Lewis and Tolkien, Alexander gave many like me a wonderful tale of values, joy, character and integrity. Your many fans salute you, Mr. Alexander, and we pray that you may walk the Summer Country now where the leaves never fade, sorrow never blooms and joy never dies. (Photo Associated Press)
I, too, enjoyed his Prydain Chronicles as a kid. Thank you for the news of his death.
